Triathlon for a Type 1 Cure
In 2006 and 2007 I took part in some bike rides that raised funds to support Dr. Denise Faustman's research into a cure for type 1 diabetes. With the help from many, many friends and colleagues I was able to raise over $18,000.
Since then, Dr. Faustman has started a phase 1 trial for her approach. In 2009 she will be starting a phase 2 trial. For this work her lab will need about $25 million.
This year I'm taking part in the Hyannis Sprint 2 Triathlon to raise funds for this important research. This will be my first 'tri' and I'll be swimming 1/4 miles, biking 10 miles and running 3.5 miles to raise funds for this research. I'm hoping to raise $3,600 to mark the end of my 36th year with diabetes.
The costs of diabetes are staggering, about $116 billion in 2007 for all types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes requires daily injections of insulin and blood glucose monitoring many times a day to try and control blood sugar levels. High blood sugars levels increases the risk of diabetes complications like blindess, kidney disease and other health issues.
I appreciate your sponsorship for any amount. To do this please make out a check to Massachusetts General Hospital with Dr. Faustman Type 1 research in the memo field.
